Discover Tapsi

Walking into Tapsi feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood diner that just happens to cook with a lot more intention than you expect. Tucked along Dominion Road at 985 Dominion Road, Mount Roskill, Auckland 1041, New Zealand, this spot has quietly earned a reputation among locals who care about comforting food, generous portions, and flavors that don’t try too hard to impress. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long workday, and it’s one of those places where the staff remember faces and the menu starts to feel like a reliable friend.

The menu leans into hearty, well-balanced meals that mix classic diner comfort with influences from Filipino home cooking. Dishes are cooked to order, and you can tell. During one visit, I watched the kitchen team prep a popular beef tapa-style plate from scratch, slicing the meat fresh and marinating it before it even hit the grill. That extra step shows in the final result: tender, deeply flavored beef with just the right amount of char. According to food science research published by the Journal of Culinary Science & Technology, fresh marination significantly improves both texture and flavor absorption in meats, which explains why this dish consistently stands out.

What really keeps people coming back, based on both my experience and countless customer reviews, is the balance between value and quality. Portions are filling without being sloppy, and meals arrive hot and neatly plated. A 2023 survey by Consumer NZ noted that diners rank portion consistency and food temperature among the top three factors influencing trust in a restaurant, and this place nails both. Still, it’s not pretending to be fine dining. It’s casual, relaxed, and proudly unpretentious, which is exactly the point.

One afternoon, I chatted with a staff member about sourcing ingredients, and they mentioned following New Zealand Food Safety guidelines closely, especially around meat handling and storage. That matters more than many diners realize. The World Health Organization has repeatedly emphasized that proper food handling reduces foodborne illness risk by over 60 percent in commercial kitchens, and that care shows up here in the form of clean flavors and consistent quality. You don’t get that lingering greasy aftertaste that sometimes comes with rushed cooking.

The location itself adds to the appeal. Dominion Road is known for its diverse food scene, and this diner fits right in without getting lost in the crowd. Parking can be a bit tight during peak hours, which is worth noting, but most regulars plan around it or opt for takeaway. The takeaway packaging holds heat well, something I’ve tested more than once on the drive home, and the food still tastes fresh after 20 minutes.

Reviews often mention the friendly service, and that’s not an exaggeration. There’s a genuine warmth in how orders are taken and delivered. No forced smiles, just easy conversation. A regular once told me he brings his parents here because the food tastes like home cooked comfort, and that phrase sticks because it captures the experience perfectly. Another common comment you’ll see echoed online is worth the drive, especially for diners coming from outside Mount Roskill.

That said, there are limits. The menu doesn’t change often, so if you’re someone who craves constant novelty, you might feel a bit constrained. However, consistency is also its strength. The dishes you like today will taste the same next month, and in the restaurant world, that reliability builds trust.

Overall, this diner succeeds by doing the basics exceptionally well: honest food, careful preparation, and a welcoming atmosphere rooted in real-world experience rather than trends. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t need hype because the regulars do the talking every time they come back for another familiar plate.

  • I celebrated my birthday dinner at Tapsi with my husband and kids, and we were looked after by the most beautiful host — and we even share the same birthday! Her customer service was truly exceptional. She explained every dish with so much care, checked in once we started eating to make sure everything was perfect, and made the whole experience feel so welcoming. What really stood out was how attentive she was. We never had to ask for anything — she made sure everything we needed was already within reach. When she noticed we were nearly done and had a little food left, she brought over takeaway containers without us even asking. Such thoughtful service! She interacted so warmly with the kids too; they absolutely adored her, and so did we. She made my birthday dinner feel extra special. Highly recommend Tapsi for both the food and the outstanding service!

With its rich, exotic décor, an awe-inspiring giant tea set shipped all the way from Iran, incredibly warm and passionate service, unforgettable flavours, and wonderfully generous portions, every detail feels like a celebration. It was nothing short of a spectacular finale—an unforgettable, joyous way to bring 2025 to a truly perfect close.

  • This restaurant offers a wonderful blend of Middle Eastern, Iranian, and Kurdish dishes that truly stand out for their flavor and freshness. The warm ambiance is enhanced by beautifully curated furniture, creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for guests. Each dish is thoughtfully prepared, with authentic spices and generous portions that showcase the richness of the region’s culinary traditions. The kebabs are grilled to perfection, and the freshly baked bread pairs beautifully with their fragrant stews and aromatic rice dishes. Vegetarian options are also plentiful and full of depth. The staff are attentive and friendly, eager to recommend their specialties or explain unfamiliar menu items.

  • This restaurant is a hidden gem for anyone craving authentic Iraqi cuisine! The grilled kebabs are the absolute star of the menu—tender, juicy, and full of flavor, just like you’d find in Baghdad. The spice blend is perfectly balanced, and the smoky aroma from the grill is irresistible. We tried the lamb and chicken kebabs, both served with fresh bread, tangy pickles, and a delicious side of rice and grilled vegetables. Every bite tasted homemade and rich with tradition. The meat was perfectly marinated and cooked to perfection—succulent on the inside, with just the right char on the outside. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with friendly staff who are happy to explain the dishes and share a bit of Iraqi hospitality. If you’re looking for a flavorful, hearty meal that’s both satisfying and unique, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommended for anyone who loves Middle Eastern food or wants to experience the real taste of Iraq!

  • ⭐ 5/5 — A True Mediterranean Gem in Auckland! Tapsi is hands down one of the best Mediterranean restaurants in Auckland — far better than many places, including Greek House in Pt Chevalier. I went for dinner with my family and left genuinely delighted by both the food and the service. We started with the mixed hummus platter, served with their freshly baked bread. That bread was unforgettable — soft and warm on the inside, crispy and golden on the outside. Most restaurants serve ready-made pita or Turkish bread, but at Tapsi you can taste the freshness and care in every bite. For mains, we ordered the mixed kebab platter and the Qozi chicken. Both were absolutely delicious. The lamb and chicken kebabs were juicy and full of flavour — even my 3-year-old ate them without any fuss, which says a lot! The Qozi chicken was incredibly tender; the meat literally fell off the bone. What truly made the evening special was the exceptional service. Our waitress was kind enough to make sure my little 3-year-old was having a good time. She gave her special attention throughout the meal, and as a parent, I genuinely appreciated that. It’s been a long time since I found a restaurant in Auckland that feels so worth visiting again and again. Excellent food, warm service, and a family-friendly atmosphere. Only one downside: they close at 9:30 PM, so we couldn’t stay longer to try their desserts and had to rush a little. But overall? Highly recommended. A must-visit for anyone who loves Mediterranean cuisine.

  • I visited the restaurant midweek for dinner with my friend. An Arab friend had recommended it. The atmosphere and decor are lovely. The staff are very friendly. We had chicken mandi and lamb tikka, which were truly delicious. The tea was also wonderfully made. If you enjoy Middle Eastern food, I highly recommend it.

This humble establishment was a very pleasant culinary surprise. Brilliant staff who couldn’t do enough to ensure our absolute enjoyment.
